Trying hard for that record SuperPi 1M run ? Here are few tips.

Generally its seen all over that though people share how to overclock, how to get stable overclocked system, I havent seen many overclockers sharing how to get those illusive record breaking runs at insane clock speeds out of their systems. And honestly most of them DO NOT want to share how they got it to bench at such speeds.

System stability is never a criteria here. All you need is a successful superpi run. Everything is fare here. All tricks in the book are fair as long as your processor finishes that run.

Here are few tips for fellow TEites who are looking for such tun.

Most of experienced overclockers will already know most and all of this. If you have anything to add, please do so.

I am not going to explain all those regular CPU - NB - VTT voltage stuff as I expect that whoever is going to try this already knows basics of overclocking. the 5th tip is most important one as many people never try this.

    1. If you are having problem booting into windows with whatever CPU, NB, Memory voltage you are tying, play around with GTLREF voltage ratio. This seems to help in giving additional stability. Not all motherboards have this option in voltage settings.

But if yours does then try settings from 55-80%. There is no rocket science there. Good ratio varies from setup to setup.

    2
. If benching in windows, download royal noir theme and use it or simple Royal theme instead of windows basic or Standard windows. This theme for some reason uses least amount of system resources and thus less chance of system crash.

    3. Run the benchmark multiple times. You will observe the time improves usually on 2nd run.

    4
. You can also try to end explorer.exe process from task manager after launching superpi and then do a bench run. Helps sometimes.

    After run is complete you

restart explorer.exe from WIndows Task Manager Application Tab by clicking New Task button and typing explorer.exe in the space provided and hitting enter.

    5. On multi core CPU usually one of the core is better than the other. SuperPi is not a multi threaded benchmark. It only needs 1 core.

If SuperPi run is failing then using task manager, Rightclick on the SuperPi process, click on Set Affinity and only select 1 CPU. Say CPU0. And see if your run completes. If it fails, then only select 2nd core by selecting CPU 1. And so on ( for quads ).

This gives you best chance of getting the best run on the stable core.

    6. You can also Try setting the priority of Superpi to Realtime. I havent found it impacting the scores too much to be honest.

    7
. Try to lower your resolution to as low as possible. I personally dont bother with this as it hardly makes any difference at all.

    8
. Disable the onboard Sound and Lan from the bios.

    9. Try to keep as less processes on startup as possible as many can crash the system at insane clock speeds.

    10. Memory timings and Memory speed DO NOT matter much for SUperPi 1M run on todays large L2 Cache CPUs. So make sure your priority if to get max Mhz out of your CPU. You can sacrifice on the memory speed and timing.

Thats all for now. if i can think of anything else I will edit this post.

Feel free to share and I urge those OC gurus out there to share the knowledge with others.

    Funky Signing out.

Nice talking, now throw over that golden chip here

Nice info BTW.Any difference between XP and Vista, and 32 bit and 64 bit ?

Not much difference between OS to be honest. I have found that you can get almost same superpi score on windows 2k, 2003, xp, vista.

But due to its low profile people prefer XP for benching. There are lots of things that happens in vista boot which might not let the unstable system reach desktop many times.

Atleast disable indexing / prefetch and make sure you are not benching during scheduled defrag cycle or disable it.

my system bsods when i do this any idea why.. the moment i set priority before even running the bench it reboots. it wasnt at a very high speed or anything so was just curious. above normal and high etc it runs fine

Probably blocking up too much of resources, besides I haven't found it to be that helpful as Funky said.

Awesome work Funky, some nice knowledge for the beginners!

Tip 11 : Try running the superpi.exe from a virtual drive in your RAM. Might give you that slight extra edge.

    Hope you don't mind Funky

you shared those tips funky, , not good, but i think this should be made a sticky coz its gonna come handy for many. Tip 2 and 7 i never knew so will certianly try those in my next run, oh ho but with explorer killed how will tip 2 come in handy???

Re: Trying Hard for that Record SuperPi 1M run? Here are few tips.

I dont see anything wrong in sharing these things. People will eventually figure this out. but those who have the hardware available with them now and are ready to give it shot might find some helpful info.

I have never felt like keeping knowledge to myself. More the merrier. More people start pushing their pcs, better it will be. People will keep pushing each other.

About explorer killing and theme, check yourself. I dont kill explorer anymore with this theme. I tried it a while back didnt make any difference to my score. Killing explorer used to benifit a bit before i switched to noir.

    Sticky decision is upto mods.

Re: Trying Hard for that Record SuperPi 1M run? Here are few tips.

This one is quite debatable, but personally i have seen a dip of .1 second which does matter.

Tip : Before starting super pi, copy a large file more than 500MB from the OS drive to any other drive on your computer and vice versa.

and since you already have thrown the list out then let me add one of the most critical one(though following Tip 8 and 9 properly will give you almost similar results)

Tip : Install a fresh copy of Windows and then follow the steps to optimise your OS before trying to bench.

Re: Trying Hard for that Record SuperPi 1M run? Here are few tips.

Funky one serious query here, Tip 10, are you talking about 45nm processors???? coz till E 6600's and Q6600's memory timings did use to matter a lot, atleast for serious clockers, no idea with the large 6Mb cache processors yet, will find that as well in a couple of days.

Yup new 6MB cache means the 1M calculations does not really need system memory. I have found the difference between 5-5-5-15 and 4-4-4-8 to be less than 0.01th of a second.

Will it improve any further if we set affinity of all remaining processes to Core0 and affinity of SuperPi to Core1 ???

Well it wont matter much as most of the processes are just loaded into memory and idle.

You are better off with disabling unneeded process from the startup itself.

At extremely high clock speeds, you really wanna get your bench run done asap. Clicking on each processes and setting affinity might get you system crash before you have a chance to get a benchmark run

    Here're mine from personal experiences:

About ambient temps. If the room temps're low, the NB, SB, and the TRUE're a lot cooler. The heatsinks atop the mosfets as well..

In fact wen I did a benchin with the ac set to 17'c, the NB n SB remained cool. The RAMs were luke warm even tho there were fans blowin atop them. I could do a 11.890 sec S-Pi 1M run compared to the previous 12.234sec run @ Amb temps of around 30'C.
