Default Vista - a work in progress: Ballmer

Quote:
"It's a very important piece of work. We did a lot of things right and have a lot of things we need to learn from. You never want to let five years go between releases," he said.

While Microsoft recently extended the date when the XP software will be available for low-cost PCs, it doesn't plan to listen to some other complaints, including that Vista is too big. "Vista is bigger than XP, and it's gonna stay bigger than XP," Ballmer said. "We have to make sure it doesn't get bigger still."
So hope floats

Soooo.... what he's saying is that "We are selling Beta software, and giving the whole world an opportunity to beta test our product (at premium cost?) !!"

Sheesh... I love ballmer, he's more entertaining that dancing monkey.

you guys should stop trusting everything posted online about softwares & learn to try stuff for a healthy period of time then curse it if you feel like doing so

i have been using Vista since it's first beta came out back in November 2006 & have faced lesser problems than XP on it

now after Servive Pack 1 the experience has become much more fun

yes I purchased Vista Ultimate in March 2007 from USA too at the full price

P.S. If anyone finds it lagging switch to the Vista Basic Theme

I was told Vista business is the leanest of the offerings...ultimate has actually got lots of useless crap in it.

If you did not get it, the main bone of contention is why a supposedly better engineered OS needs as much resources as Vista does. If this was false then all you would need to do is switch off the eye candy and everything works just great.

Nope, its sucks RAM like no tomorrow, so that means you will just have to upgrade the whole box to 'experience' whatever it is being offered

Please stop posting that link (A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection). It was thoroughly debunked. Just about everything he claimed in that article was proved false.

You are absolutely right about Vista Udit.

Although not from beta, I have been using it since july last year. No problems with the OS at all. Infact I just cannot tolerate XP now, Vista is so much better.
Its just that people are taking it be their duty to curse microsoft for whatever they release.

Again no ones forcing anyone to use Vista. If one wants to one can, else leave it.

I was part of Vista Beta Review plan which was passed on for beta testing to MSDN premium subscribers in July 2005. I installed Vista in September 2006 and am using it since.

I really find it strange that people will try to pull down Microsoft at the drop of the hat!! Can anybody tell me that somebody forced them to use Vista? Can anybody tell me that Microsoft Vendors didn't gave them Vista Premium and forced them to buy Ultimate on gun point? Crap!!

Everybody is working for money. The sooner you get it, the better.

Vista is the best OS from Microsoft till date. The problem that not many people can't find it is, they are still mired in looking at the eye candy and trying to transport that eye candy to XP. Vista is much more than eye candy. There are so many changes that you cannot count.

It all depends on perception. How you perceive things.

Get over it. If you don't like Vista than don't use it. Period.

No hard feelings and no flames.

@Udit: I really give it to you mate. You are some of those people who stood out for Vista from day one and never changed your stance. Cheers.

Linux and Mac are good alternatives to Windows. Home users stay away from linux because of the preset notion that it is hard to use. I do not blame them for that.
What we need from linux is a modified OS like in the Asus eee pc which gives users an easier interface to work with.
Mac on the other hand has been doing well with a nice boost in sales recently.

I wish I could use VISTA, but the biggest glitch in it is it doesn't support theatre mode on second display because of the completely new way Directshow is handled in Vista.. & I simply can't live without it as my PC is my source of (daily) movies. Apart from that, the biggest annoyance is lack of FILE Type association dialog box, where u can manage associations of file types with different programs. & I'm sure there are so many day to day reasons which are holding people back to XP. This is where Microsoft Actually screwed up vista, they just thought "too much" for it.

@mehargags: Both can be easily achieved. I presume you are using ATi cards. Second displays only worked with Overlay Display Mode property which is not available in Vista. What you need to do is, just make the TV a extended desktop, drag Media Center or any player you are using and make it full screen. You are done.

File associations are much more complicated in Vista then they were in XP. In Vista, one extension can be associated with many programs. Although this was done in XP too, it was done with some middleware programs, which opened the file, checked the content and directed you to appropriate program. Eg. Visual Studio projects/solutions when different VS versions are installed on your system, XML files which will direct you to excel or internet explorer depending on the content.

Although that does not stop you from changing the associations. All you have to do is, go to Control Panel >> Default Programs. Here you get many options to open files with different extensions in various ways.

Vista has much better ease of use for day-to-day tasks. It is just that you need to change your mindset and stop looking for things in exactly the same way you used to search in XP.

the best example for it is the anywhere search and the breadcrumbs interface and the ctrl+mousewheel zoom in explorer itself.
