I goofed up big time
I reverted back from Vista to XP on my laptop
What I forgot was I had setup folder access permission for one of my folders for the admin user only
Last night I reverted back to XP and completely forgot about restoring the permissions
Now from within XP, the folder is visible but obviously no access...
Is there any way to restore access to the data - 7 Jul 07 11:09 AM #2
hmmm
i re-installed windows Xp and now dont have a control on Vista folders so cant delete those
btw you should try this :
“Permission denied” - Data recovery in Windows XP « Jayant Kumar Gandhi - 7 Jul 07 11:35 AM #3
Try using some file recovery software. May work that way

try this: right click on the folder and add ur logonname or system to the securities tab and give it full permissions. it will give u permission to access the folder then.

edit: there r a lot of threads on te asking for this same thing and i remeber posting in them. too lazy to search for them btw.

first uncheck the last option in the foder option->View tab > enable simple file sharing(?)..
Now right click the folder go to security click advanced click ownership click ur name(it must be there.. the admin name) and check the replace permission on sub directories n all..
now click apply...
will take some time...
then... click ok wen its done...
close the dialog boxes
now again right click on the folder and click security click add... add ur username.. and check FULL CONTROL.... click apply
Done...

Try resetting permissions with cacls.

You will need to take Ownership of the folder. Reverting to Vista is not going to help. I see that Arihant has already provided this info. Its the right way to go.

^^ Yes but for that, simple file sharing needs to be disabled an option which MS conviniently left out in XP home

The best solution is to boot using some sort of WinPE, LiveCD etc, and access with that.

use this software from M$: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm
(it will enable security tab in xp home)
or like Yamaraj saida list of cacls commands can be found here:Try resetting permissions with cacls.
Cacls - Modify Access Control List
Add Read-Only permission to a single file
CACLS myfile.txt /E /G "Power Users":R Add Full Control permission to a second group of users
CACLS myfile.txt /E /G "FinanceUsers":F
Now revoke the Read permissions from the first group
CACLS myfile.txt /E /R "Power Users"
Now give the first group Full-control:
CACLS myfile.txt /E /G "Power Users":F
Give the Finance group Full Control of a folder and all sub folders
CACLS c:\docs\work /E /T /C /G "FinanceUsers":F
