Legacy IDE, Native IDE, AHCI and RAID??

Hello i just got my biostar TA 785GE 128M Mobo
I have 2 SATA HDD 250GB and 1TB
In bios there is option
Legacy IDE, Native IDE, AHCI and RAID and also IDE > AHCI
ANd also what abt SATA IDE Combined mode ..Enabel or Disable??
which one should i select i want to install Vista.

I selected AHCI after 30 mins installation is at 33% Expanding files . PLease Help.

As far as the Gigabyte goes these are the settings i usually use

On Chip Sata Controller: Enabled
On Chip Sata Type: Native IDE
On Chip Sata port: IDE or As sata type

Just went thru some of the forums online and found it could easily be a RAM issue.. since AHCI drivers are built into vista and shouldnt cause any problem...

Vista have native support for ACHI. ACHI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) is more advanced than Native IDE or Lagacy. If your HDD have advanced features like NCQ, you should select ACHI. AHCI is supposed to be better ( though there wont be any noticeable changes in system performance)

If you select Native IDE, your HDD will just emulate IDE over a Sata cable.

Also, once you have selected a setting, if you want to change that again, you have to reinstall the OS.

What about SATA IDE Combined mode ..Enabel or Disable?? if i select AHCI.

use AHCI... Otherwise your system will be too slow...
on AHCI the burst rate of xfer between SATA Hdd can reach 100 MBps and averages around 50 - 60 MBps ... on IDE emulation ... data xfer will not cross 50 MBps... my experience with AMD 780g...

enable AHCI
enable SATA Native ports...
2 devices will be detected as IDE and rest as SATA...
if you enable IDE Emulation then
4 Devices as IDE and 2 as SATA..

you problem with 33% expanding is not the fault of your Hdd's AHCI mode but
with your DVD Drive + Media they suck man....

Thats why i always install vista and XP by pendive ....

Hi , i Plugged 160GB in sata 1 port and 1TB in sata 2 port
installed windows Vista in AHCI mode on 160GB
Windows is too slow on boot up and in startup.The taskbar programs open one by one slowly.
and i copied a 1Gb file and speed was 75 ~ 90MB/s
What is the problem with AHCI why is it so slow? . Should i set it to Native IDE??

no donot set it to Native IDE...

One of your Hdd's is giving you trouble....
AMD platform for some reason more prone to show you this...

Disconnect everthing and connect it one by one....
Use diffrent Power connector and SATA cable....

first boot system with only 160 gb...
then check performance ....
if not satisifed...

load vista on 1 TB too and then check...
also check BIOS settings....
CPU, memory are manually set and not put on AUTO...

one of the things will got to help....

xfer of 70 MBps is actually quite good...
jerking you are experiencing is due to some other issue...
trust me on this one....
SATA 2.0 deserves to run in AHCI mode....
you are overlooking other problems .... getting fixed
on AHCI mode....

get the board replaced if it still does not solve your issue....
running in IDE mode should not be an option....
(really my laptop... HP/compaq and ASUS does not
even give an option for IDE emulation....)

BTW .... SMPS is good enough...???
not some 400 bucks smps that comes with cabby...???

the ratings seem quite ok for your setup mate, but m not sure about the brand of the PSU (supercomp). Seems its a local brand and you must have got with ur cabby. So cant rely on that.

Moreover these local PSUs will cause havoc to your system. Better get rid of that buy a good PSU like coolermaster 460w or gigabyte 460w. In case if you require an excellent, long lasting, future proof PSU go for corsair 450w or 550w. The latter is very future proof in case if you are going to for higher end gfx card...

Vista pagefile option was set to "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives". When i was defragmenting C: drive via perfect disk , it stated that there is no page file on drive. Now i set it to "Custom size", a pagefile is created now. After this there is a significant increase in OS Boot speed and also file copying speed now are 80~100 MB/s. Dont know the logic behind this but it worked. Still on AHCI

SO inorder to Install Win 7 and Win XP what should be the options? Legacy IDE, Native IDE, AHCI and RAID??

AHCI.

XP does not support AHCI natively, you will need to slipstream your mobo's sata/RAID drivers in your XP installation cd to install XP. Vista and Win7 have native support for ACHI.

These cheap PSUs work well when they're new but problems start cropping up after 6-8 months of use.
