Just shifted to Vista. Now what?

OFF your track, but i also want to install vista 64 bit, but i heard that it has driver problems, i mean it required signed driver only. Do you phase any problem regarding this.

You can turn off that requirement using tweaking softwares easily. Also, almost most of the drivers have 64 bit versions now, search for your hardware drivers if you have all the driver support, you could give it a shot.

You sure about that? Because you can't do it so easily. It is something you have to choose on each boot.
But it isn't an issue - most hardware now has 64 bit drivers. Some laptops can be painful, but for desktop hardware you'll be fine. Also, I believe there is a tool available from Microsoft that will tell you whether your hardware has drivers available.

i just installed ultimate x64 and liking it a lot too... aero glass looks very nice. bootup and shutdown really fast. vmware server is one app that doesnt work for me. so using vmware workstation and virtualbox.

games? you might be in for disappointment... crysis which used to give me about 25-30 FPS in XP has dropped to about 10 FPS

i think that option does not work in the final released version (RTM) just the betas/RCs... the comments also say that and i also came across other posts on the net mentioning the same.

I didnt even know abt this feature until i tried ati tool, which installs custom driver.. Wonder why they added such a lame feature..

When I first started using Vista (legal BTW), it started off well..

Other problems set aside, here is what I faced with networked media:

The first hint of trouble came within a few days when I had to transfer some of my media files over to a Samba NAS server
A sub 1 Gig transfer first took a huge amount of time to start , then took inordinately long to get done

Adding my media repository (~5K songs which may not be small, but isnt too huge either) to the media player took ages to complete

Shifting , seeking between songs was amazingly painful

Videos were even worse, networked Videos (even SD) would often stutter, forget HD content

Mind you, all this while, my OS X mac and XP desktop were happily handling all of this over the same network and same Samba and AFP shares

Even USB external HDD transfer of media files would sometimes randomly slowdown

Apart from the nightmware I face with my media setup, other tasks within the OS started off decently well but then I started experiencing random explorer shell crashes and other freeze issue within a few weeks.

Also, the system in question was a C2D with 2GB of RAM so even though not top of the line, but not a slouch either

I still don't know what was in the innards of Vista that cause all of this, perhaps some weird DRM check that would happen each time media files were transferred?
