There is no diff. btw. Ubuntu and Kubuntu . the only dif.. lies in the Desktop Manager they use.. Kubuntu = Ubuntu + KDE + less applications.. I only use it because of KDE.. Also Kubuntu has broken updates every time.. I would recommend you Linux Mint ... or Mandriva 2008.1

How come you don't like openSUSE. I have always considered openSUSE to have the best integrated and most polished KDE...

Well I do love to use SUSE working but the 10.3 never worked for me.. I have tried every possible measure to get that OS working but all in vain.. Also i don't really like the over all interface and using I still find Yast pretty confusing .. Will use SUSE 11

i want software makers to understand one simple thing -- users don't want bulky applications anymore. sure there r those how just love getting more for their buck, but that, as a general rule, will always back-fire. Suse gives you 16 GB of softwares.... Ubuntu on the other hand does more than better with a mere 2.5 odd GB of footprint. if suse has to compete against ubuntu it has to return to the 700 MB limit for its softwares. in the days to come, i see a gradual shift to more thrifty softwares --those that do all the work better but leave a tiny footprint. people want more space for their music, pics, videos and less for their OSes. the linux stakeout has only begun

oh, and by the way, it appears that though both look alike, the installer for kubuntu and ubuntu are structurally different.

yes darkstar, i agree the opensuse menu choices are vast and confusing. one of the reasons i stayed with ubuntu is gnome's simplicity.

i still like/prefer kde's look-n-feel (dont like KDE4) and all the apps like amarok/ktorrent/k3b etc, so i will give opensuse 11 a try if it comes with kde3 or has a theme for kde4 to make it look like classic kde3

another reason why i dropped opensuse 10.3 is because during install if you check the "check for update/repositories" boxes (something like that) then it takes HUGE amount of time to download package lists on my 256k connection.

also the package management/solver etc are much slower than apt/deb of ubuntu.

but both fedora and opensuse are claiming they have improved packaging speeds so i will also give opensuse 11 a try again

See Duncan Mac-Vicar P. Blog Archive fast package management and yum results journal/notes

@Pause : Lemme tel you SUSE is one of the best distro. If you wanna try latest GNU software .. The only distro that provide repos. and up[dates as soon as the s/w is released You will get the latest Compiz, and all.. and in Ubuntu you have to wait for new release.. I still got Gimp 2.4.2 in Kubuntu while 2.5 is already out .. No Amarok 1.4.8 in Kubuntu also .. If you wanna compile you have to satisfy Repository .. while SUSE even provide Amarok Alpha if you are interested

@vishal : Yes Suse takes a hell lot of time in Updating .. Even in reloading repos. it takes nearly 5-10mins on 256KUL..

The next distro .. I am going to try is openSUSE 11 but before that I am going to get dirty with Arch + KDE Mod. as far as KDE 4 I not going to use it before 4.1/ / Have tried 4.02 and it still needs a lot of makeup

I personally advise people to skip Ubuntu 7.10. My 7.04 setup was great, but when I upgraded to 7.10 things that worked started breaking with no easy way to fix except to fall back to source recompilation... plus many of the non-free packages were never ported over so....
8.04 ought to be interesting comparatively, though as far as I am concerned, 6.10 was the version in which Ubuntu showed it was better than Fedora (up until then Fedora ruled the roost among free Linux distros IMHO)

Hello Pause,

If the windows goes outta your screen then press and hold Alt+F7 and then click anywhere on the windows and try to drag move it. It should move. When I was at DSK Infotech attending RHCE classes, the teacher used to use often use it. Give it a shot.

I first, like everyone, installed restricted driver. And after configuring "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", i was able to get the drivers to work at wanted resolution. But it wasnt stable, sometimes when i start my pc, it would show me static desktop, with zero compiz effects. Even if it started with compiz in effect, it was terrible, the effects appeared like alpha versions. Hiccups, jerks and all. So the driver wasnt working for me.

I then came to know about envy software to install nvidia drivers. I un-installed the restricted drivers and installed envy. In the envy list, it showed me 3 drivers, i selected the one meant for me but it always stopped mid-way claiming kernel problem. So i tried all 3, and all failed in same fashion. So i thought this may be cos of incompatibility with the new kernel upgrade ubuntu provided.
But logically there shouldnt be a problem.

But i was hell bent on using ubuntu as my primary OS inspite of wasting substantial amount of time. But my liking of this OS was stronger.

So i deleted all the ubuntu partitions on my hard-disk from WinXP.

I installed Ubuntu from scratch having my graphic card in slot from the very beginning.
But this time i didnt install nvidia's restricted driver. I updated my OS first. Got the latest kernel installed. Then i again went to envy. Again damn same thing, it failed mid-way. What a pain in arse, i thought to myself.

Luckily there was a update for my very graphic card chipset(xfx 8600gt) on the nvidia site.
Looked like victory was close. So i downloaded that.
It was installed without problem and i configured "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" with help of read me file and couple of threads from ubuntuforums, highly concious as i

did that. In same old way, i got the resolution for my monitor, but noooooo, the same hiccup train arrived the station named "peace" and literally bombed it. The kT of uranium

it brought in its rail cars was probably of the same amount like before, but the damage was much much more as my WBC force was still healing their injuries of past attack in hospitals. Though this time, compiz always started with completely in effect(whenever turning PC on), but with hiccups.

The amount of time wasted looked beyond recovery. So my planning commison was asked to make a fool proof policy for future.
The visible options were
1- Throw away graphic card, give up gaming(though very little), and use ubuntu the way Penguin the Chief wants me to.
2- Use the countries nuclear arsenal and destroy Linux army forcing Penguin the Cheif to go underground for next few months while they re-enforce and make better policies of looking at my country with total respect. Extrimism wont be tolerated at any costs.

Option 2 was decided. Ubuntu gutsy CD's were assasinated by military snipers as the country declared it to be a terrorist attack.

Anyways, i am waiting for the next ubuntu hardy-heron to go official. I will try it and see if it works for me. Till then we are enjoying the support of Mr.Gates.
My love for ubuntu is very much intact nevertheless.

This pain was in my head since sometime and needed to be pumped out. I am feeling damn so light now. Public forums are awesome concept !!!

Sorry to derail my post mid-way.

I couldnt control myself any longer to get back to ubuntu....

Today i tried again. I had a valid reason to try again...

My 8600GT was flashed with BIOS of XXX version. And today i flashed back to original bios.

Installed Gutsy fresh. Updated it full.
And used envy to install restricted drivers...
I still cant believe how fast it all happened. Half an hour and it was all done. Didnt even had to see xserver config screen. Envy did it all for me.....
And everything is smooth and soft now

HIP HOP HURRRAYYYY

What a nice happy ending to my sad ubuntu story.

Here is the certificate of success

How do u go about installing OS's?

I have installed ubuntu 4 times, XP 4-5 times, and Vista once on my 160 Gig HDD but never messed up.

I installed ubuntu on 10 GB unformatted partition:

/swap - 512 MB
/boot - 50 MB
/ - remaining...

How do u do?

It is not necessary to allocate space for /boot.. I would rather suggest you to mount you /home in diff. partition as its pretty helpful and if you save it under Main File system and in future you plan to re-install or install dif.. GNU OS ..you will lose all the data in /home But if it is in diff. partition data will be left intact
