Gimp developers after 1 year of development has finally pushed the first testing release [2.7.0]. The 2.7 series is a testing release and will eventually form the stable 2.8.0 series.

With the new upcoming 2.8 series, Gimp will see some radical change.

    • On Canvas Text Editing
    • Improved BALB and GEGL integration
    • Merger of GSOC projects.
    • Improved UI
    • Lots of performance improvements and bug fixes
    • Tagging brushes, patterns etc
    • Grouping of layers.
    • Ability to rotate brushes

The first changelog for 2.7.0 [alpha 2.8] has brought some interesting facts but the headliner was the change in license, with 2.8 version Gimp will opt the highly acclaimed GPLv3 and will be the one of the most used software to opt the v3 license..

I don't think it will be implemented in 2.8, btw the mask in Gimp is fixed along with the layer so its almost impossible to do it. But inorder to do it one must change the way mask work in Gimp /

Yea the changes are awesome. 2.10 will bring even more drastic changes Had a chat with deleopers

Well till date Gimp was using GNU Gpl v2+ and RM Stallman released GPL v3 few years back. Initially people restrained to GPLv2 but now slowly they are changing ,even Openoffice going to adopt v3.

There are no implications, GPL mostly meant for Opensource software so you can use it if you want to release it in full Open source environment , read the license here The GNU General Public License - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)

Just an update guys : The news got staggering diggs and made it to the first page with a massive 332+ digg and going more Linux/Unix

Something interesting for you guys GPLv3 hits 50 percent adoption | The Open Road - CNET News and the links therein. It tells you what is happening in the ecosystem. A trend.

@Speedz for you check out http://www.kronishlieb.com/58524 it gives some idea about what the differences are between the two versions. I have to still drill through all of it.

Something more, apparently Linus was thinking of re-licensing under GPLv3 http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/541827
