I've tried this method before with GRUB 0.99x and it works like a charm. Has anyone tried this successfully with GRUB 2?

grub2 aint so bad. its just got a new config format which is cool once you get a hang of it. grep the web for grub2 tutorials to get a hang of stuff... i am successfully quadbooting win7 with 3 other linux distros using ubuntu's grub2 as the bootloader in the MBR...

there are some annoyances (or cant figure out solutions yet) for example, i cant figure out how to custom arrange the OSes autodetected by os-prober script... i want to put win7 at the top of the list and default boot but cant figure out rearranging the items properly at the moment...

Grub 2 is different. This method will NOT work with Grub 2. For more info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

So, if you have installed Windows 7 after Ubuntu 9.10, you'll have to go through the above mentioned link as Karmic Koala uses Grub 2.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 in first HDD and installed Windows 7 today on 2nd HDD replacing Vista. Now the problem that has arisen is that now the GRUB is not recognizing Windows 7. What is the way to make GRUB 2 detect the OS? Any command or what?

I think you'll need to restore GRUB for that. But not sure, wait for other inputs also.

have you simply tried: "sudo update-grub" ? does that help? if not, then some searching would probably find a solution...
