My card is XFX 8600gt, same as urs. But dunno why it cites kernel error all the time in envy for me.
While restricted drivers simply dont work as they should making the compiz effects painful..

in envy i just selected "download the latest driver" option. other thing u can try is download the graphics driver from nvidia site (it should be .run file) and run it urself.
BTw, did u try using that command to change the resolution?

After installing the drivers i was able to play even TF2 on Ubuntu.

as i said earlier

for painless linux experience stick to all intel soln. they make their standards open . thus all the headache of driver is left for linux guys and we know they are the best.

man i installed ubuntu in sata 2 hd with ahci , ncq enabled and windows f6 problem!!! so smooth.

go with
intel proccy+intel mobo

Tux It ain't over yet :)

Ok, seems my zeal for linux isn't over yet. I've just ordered a Kubuntu CD. Once it arrives I'll see if it can be properly installed. Wish me luck.

if kubuntu works, then i'll simply remove windows and install kubuntu... or perhaps keep windows in a 5 GB partition and give the rest space to kubuntu. dunno..

Instead i would suggest you to Try Linux Mint. It is Ubuntu + Some Tweaks which makes everything work Out of box.
Just install it & get complete peace of mind.
Download its main edition

What makes Linux mint(Daryna )ideal for the desktop?

* Out of the box multimedia support
* Microsoft Windows Integration (Dual-boot, NTFS read/write support, Migration Assistant)
* One-Click install system (Linux Mint Software Portal, mintInstall)
* Easy file-sharing (mintUpload)
* Desktop features, Control Center, mintMenu
* 3D Effects
* Great configuration tools
* Great selection of default applications (OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, Gimp, Pidgin, XChat, Amarok..etc)
* Solid package base (Google Earth, Picasa, Skype.. a lot of important software present in the repositories or in the Linux Mint Software Portal, compatibility with all Ubuntu Gutsy repositories and most Debian packages)

Linux Mint

Be sure read the release notes, Most important Known issues part

okay... but looking at kubuntu as of now.... will try it out and see if there are any serious compatibility issues... most of my frnds use xp. and if there are none... and if i can find the additional nvidia and wifi drivers for kubuntu, then i'll gradually shift to linux. not jumping in at the deep end as of now.

With kubuntu, you need to install all such separately.

Okay, the good news is that Kubuntu does install on the Compaq F733AU laptop. however it is still not compatible with the NVIDIA graphics card directly. it isn't as easy as simply enabling the restricted drivers. true it does download and install the latest package and is in use but u still don't get the 1280 x 800 rez.... and in the meantime it also managed to chip away some DLL file frm the windows partition making it impossible to load windows. had to reformat the entire laptop. nxt time will use the manual partition instead.

Better wait for official hardy heron.

Less than one month left, control dude control

But that resolution issue can be solved from xconfig(which is made easier in heron), but i have no idea about kubuntu. I just hope kubuntu is not much different from ubuntu.

I tried booting the Hardy beta live CD multiple times on my HP tablet and it worked without needing to provide the noapic kernel boot parameter to prevent it hanging.

Plus I noticed tapping the touchscreen actually works like a mouse click although the pointer does not move to the tapped position.. I hope touchscreen will work better in Hardy...

I am also hopeful that wireless will work without the need for setting up ndiswrapper coz I see the new "b43" driver getting lots of work done...
