since you have an Ati card, prepare for a VERY hard and frustrating , if not impossible road to getting compiz/beryl

if you have an nvidia onboard graphics, suggest you use them instead

I also was a long time SUSE/KDE user but I got hooked on Ubuntu/GNOME's clean and simple approach. I also think the RPM based packaging/updates are slower than debs, at least on openSUSE its slow. Now I am on Ubuntu both in office and at home

Although there was a blog about upcoming openSUSE 11 package solver being super fast now, so I might actually switch back because I prefer KDE 3.x (dont like KDE4)...

See Duncan Mac-Vicar P. Blog Archive fast package management

Its not that every linux user has to run compiz/beryl. Default desktop env would be more than good enough.

I think within few months of starting he can figure that out. The config is more than enough for getting started.

ubuntu with your eyes closed. You will have to download some updates . lesser if you install a more recent version.
Ubuntu:Gutsy -
I consider the above guide the ubuntu bible. anything else, problems etc , google should help.

You will need to invest some time/bandwidth to get the stock ubuntu install into something usable ( mp3 , divx etc codecs, Java runtime , nvidia hw drivers, stuff like that ) , but once you do, you'll love it

Get Ubuntu or Kubuntu .. Well apart from that you can try Fedora .. Stay away for Open SUSE the OS only looks good the core manufacturing *****..

@Greenhorn :-- Those were days when ATI support for Linux was week now drivers support of ATI is even stronger than nVIDIA

You might like to use these guides which will help you configure your ubuntu for you
