NoT Entirely True!
Some games can be played under wine like Counter strike,Half-Life 2,Call of Duty 4 etc etc.

check here what apps work
Wine AppDB - Wine Application Database

the problem is game makers do not care to make games playable on Linux, its just few bunch of people to try to make it run. faking a windows environment. sometime they fail or sometimes the pass.

If you are a hardcore gamer, then stick to windows

i do know about wine , cedega et al, but for a normal user , it just isnt possible.

that's why i said the simple answer

I am passionate about linux and gaming, but I have to admit that gaming on linux is just not mature enough for me to take it seriously

Using wine cedega for someone new to linux is not easy. Also if someone has a highend config why not opt for an OS which is the best compatible for gaming as well. Linux is fine for htpc, servers, download rigs but when it comes to gaming Windows still is the #1 choice.

Dual booting is not tough at all. Linux setups are pretty easy these days. If a person has a copy of windows then there is no need for linux. Linux is for those who need a windows alternative, and are on a budget, and do not want to use a pirated copy of windows.

If you read my reply it was specifically written for you. I see no reasons to switch between windows and linux or running them in dual boot.

The reason why people still keep windows as an option is because linux's failure to succeed as a good standalone OS. Linux is a viable OS for those who do not have the system configuration to handle the windows bloat.

Again even if someone is hellbent on using a linux distro for gaming its upto him/her to do so.

Wait for Ubuntu 8 Series which will be released in a week, or download the Beta.

Drivers for ATI will be available from ati.com website or amd.ati.com
