Top Ultrabooks for the money – April 2013

Ultrabooks is a term which was coined by Intel in 2012. Ultrabooks are basically premium, high end sub-notebooks. Confused? Don’t be. Take a notebook, make it super light and pack it with a low power (low voltage series) CPU. Add good battery life and solid state drives for storage with a high resolution display, and of course a premium price tag and that pretty much sums up an Ultrabook. Now don’t get me wrong, Ultrabooks aren’t exactly gimmicks. Fast forward to 2013 and these devices have actually started to make sense, with their price performance ratio improving (as well as the value for money factor). So here’s a round up of the best ultrabooks you can buy for your money.

1. Sony VAIO Duo 11

First up is the Sony VAIO Duo 11. The Duo 11 is true to it’s name, with true dual functionality. Under normal operation, it behaves as a tablet docked on a keyboard. Push down the display and it neatly folds up to take a touchscreen tablet form running Microsoft’s Windows 8 OS. The ultrabook maintains it’s dimensions, with a 11.6 inch display packing a full 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution. Neat huh?

The ultra book has stunning looks, and the Gun Metallic color is simply elegant. The price is tad on the higher side, but hey, you gotta pay for them features! If you like the small form factor, and are looking for a laptop/tablet hybrid (and have no budget constraints of course), then the VAIO Duo 11 is a definite go for you!

2. Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13

The Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 is another innovative product in the ultrabook segment. Packing a 10 finger multi touch display, the Ideapad Yoga is a 13.3 inch convertible with multiple modes of operation. One of them include the pure laptop mode. Remove the display (section) of the laptop, and you have a tablet running Windows 8. The concept is similar to Sony’s VAIO Duo 11, but the approach is slightly different.

3. Sony VAIO T13

The Sony VAIO T13 is a standard ultrabook offering. Till now you read about convertibles with all the bells and whistles, well now it’s time for a simple ultrabook that keeps it thin and light, and packs the same reference specifications as the earlier offerings. The display is at 13.3 inches and storage is limited to 128 GB SSD.

With the Sony VAIO T13, you do sacrifice on some things such as the lower resolution display, or the reduced battery backup (down from 8 hours). However, this Macbook design inspired ultrabook gives ample value for money and is a viable option in it’s price range.

4. Asus S550CM

The Asus S550CM takes a slightly different approach to the ultrabooks market. Instead of being light and slim with a small display, the Asus S550CM is a hybrid of a laptop and ultrabook, packing some of the better features of both. And this is perhaps the most able ultrabook for gaming, with the 2 GB nVidia GT 635M GPU on board. The display has grown to a full 15.6 inches, but the panel is 10 point touch (phew!). So you Windows 8 buffs, you can enjoy the Modern UI with the swipe of your finger.

5. Samsung NP530

Being the cheapest ultrabook in this round up doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the most inferior one. The Samsung NP530 packs a dual core Intel Core i5 processor, just like the other offerings. 4 GB of DDR3 RAM is onboard as well. The display is at 14 inches, with a WXGA resolution. The most interesting part is the addition of the entry level nVidia GT 620M GPU, which will allow you to play a few more games than the Intel HD 4000.

If anybody is looking for an entry level ultrabook, look no further because the Samsung NP530 is here!
