Default Simultaneous dual mode (802.11g & n) router

Hello guys, Will be buying a router in a few months. Recently i came to know that not all the N routers support simultaneous dual mode. i.e., i want to go for a wi-fi router which can concurrently support both G and N modes. Please advice me a VFM router for this purpose.

Simultaneous dual-band denotes an N router which can broadcast signals on both, the 2.4Ghz as well as 5Ghz frequencies at the same time. Simultaneously. What you're looking for can be done by any standard single-band N standard router since the N standard is backwards compatible with the older B and G standards. You don't need a simultaneous dual band router to run a mix of N and G standard clients. You only require it if you've got clients that work on the 5Ghz frequency. Could be A standard clients or N standard clients that support 5Ghz.

I agree that the N band router is backward compatible with G band clients. But the question is whether it can support simultaneoulsy or not. For instance, i have a laptop and a desktop. The former supports N band while the later only supports G band. I want to enjoy the benefits of N band in my laptop and at the same time i want to use G band in my desktop . Could this be possible ?.

Because someone in this forum stated that most of the routers support simultaneous N and G band usage. But since i dint want to end up buying a router which doesnt support this feature, i asked. So is it better to go either with the linksys 160n or the 120n ?

You can use both computers at the same time with either the WRT160N or the WRT120N, but in any case the speed of the N computer will suffer a bit. All N standard routers support an N and a G client simultaneously.

Incidentally, neither the WRT160N nor the WRT120N are simultaneous dual band. They're both single band routers. The only simultaneous dual band routers that Linksys has are the WRT610N and the WRT400N.

Between the two, the WRT160N is a better deal.

There are three types of N standard routers.

1) Single Band: These are at the bottom end of the spectrum. Single band means that the router only broadcasts signals on a single frequency, i.e., 2.4Ghz. The budget N routers are usually single band routers.

2) Dual Band: Dual band routers can broadcast a signal on EITHER the 2.4Ghz or the 5Ghz frequency. So there will be just a single wireless network, but it's up to you whether it's the 2.4Ghz network or the 5Ghz network.

3) Simultaneous Dual Band: These are at the top end of the spectrum. These routers can broadcast signals on both frequencies, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, simultaneously. So if you have a simultaneous dual band N router, you'll effectively have two wireless networks. One on the 2.4Ghz frequency and one on the 5Ghz frequency.

The range of the 5Ghz network is typically less than that of the 2.4Ghz network, however, the throughput is better due to less interference and stuff.

Which devices, ones used on regular basis, can cause such interference? other than cordless phones..

Linksys WRT610N should be the one that you need.

Description:

Built for speed – optimized for media. Music, movies, gaming: whatever you’re into, the Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router delivers double the bandwidth and media-optimized performance so you can enjoy it more smoothly, with less lag, all around your home. Easy to use and setup; includes Mac setup wizard.

Experience faster wireless connectivity with fewer interruptions with two bands of Wireless-N, today’s most advanced wireless technology. The 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands are designed to work separately yet simultaneously, so you can easily customize your ideal configuration – for example, use the 2.4 GHz band to surf, email and print while keeping the less crowded 5 GHz band free for time sensitive traffic like music, gaming and high-definition video. Built-in Media Optimized Networking technology gives time-sensitive traffic priority, so your media can run more smoothly, with fewer interruptions.

Apart from cordless phones, microwave ovens and bluetooth devices also cause interference since they're on the 2.4Ghz frequency.

^^Netgear and D-Link too have dual band routers. Check the pricing of their models. Should be lot cheaper.
