metalheart is somewhat of a mystery
Umm A powerful router solution...?

I am absolutely perplexed over choosing the right router that has an incredible range.

I live in a house that has two floors (including the basement). The router that I'm currently using is the standard "DNA-2011" router provided by Airtel. However, the data transfer rate between the WLAN network is pathetic. Also, the range is not that great. The rooms at the far end of the basement get absolutely NO signal.

I am therefore, looking for a router that has, put very vaguely, a fantastic range.

Primary usage (apart from the web, of course) will be accessing the main server PC (that has music, movies and other data).

The problem with the current router:1) Impossible to stream movies properly from the server PC
2) Pathetic Range
3) Slow transfer rates in the LAN network.

My question(s) is..

1) What will be an ideal choice for a router within a budget of Rs.5000 ?

2) Is there a possibility of combining the network strength of two routers (one in the basement without a DSL line, one on the ground floor with the DSL line) ?

PS:1) I CANNOT change the position of the router (apart from the fact that it is placed in the center of the floor, the internal wiring can only be accessible till that point).Nor can I get the DSL line in the basement (Very lengthy and expensive process for my building is quite old).

Thanks!!

Within a budget of 5k, you could look at the Linksys WRT160N. If you stretch your budget a bit, there's also the WRT320N.

You can't combine the network strength of two routers. If you have two routers, you'll end up with two wireless networks. Which is manageable, so long as both routers are connected to each other via an ethernet cable. Or you could get a router that supports custom firmwares like DD-WRT or Tomtato and configure the second router in Wireless Repeater mode.

A few tips:

1) Keep the router at a higher location. In your case, keep it on the top floor.

2) Don't keep the router on anything metal, like a metal cupboard or something. A wooden cupboard/table would be a better option.

3) Don't keep the router on top of a PC.

4) If you get a router with external antennae, keep both the antennae pointing outwards at a 45 degree angle.

5) If you've got other wireless networks in range, install Network Stumbler on a wireless computer and check what channels the other networks are running on, and make sure you're on a channel no one else is on. The best channels would be 1, 6 and 11.

Belkin G router has the facility to use as repeater. For 5k, you can get 3 Belkin G routers (1.4k per piece). Connect one to your DSL line and use other two as repeater. Problem solved
