Since we already have a s/w thread for Symbian OS phones, why not one for Windows Mobile too?

Of the bunches of software I have tried, here are what I felt are the most useful for me...

Most of the apps listed below are freeware.

    Why so? Because,
    • A: they are free
    • B: On the WM platform, I have noticed that the good freeware apps tend to be far less memory and resource intensive than their paid counterparts

    System Tools

    • Task Manager
Considering it is a Windows Mobile we are talking about, are memory leaks, program crashes and system hang all that surprising..Not really..right?

Which is why any self respecting WM user needs to have a good task manager and application switcher on the phone

This one is what I like the most because of its small memory footprint and the sheer amount of features it offers.Other good options are The best part is all opf the apps above are freeware and have a far lower memory footprint than other similar paid apps
    • File Manager
The default file explorer on WM leaves a lot to be desired
Thankfully, there are a bunch of good and free optionsi

And of course, Total commander. I personally prefer the former though.
    • File Encryption
    Simple, effective and free:
    Autres créations

Only hitch is , it is in french...But the application is easy enough to understand despite that.
    • Setting management:
PHM Pocket PC PowerToys 0.18: Suspend, Reset, Today, Alt-Tab, Alt-F4, PHMShell32.dll icons library, Shortcuts, My Documents library, Fonts control panel (settings) applet, Databases control panel (settings) applet, Scheduled Tasks control panel (settings) applet, Run, Character Map SIP, Notepad, AutoPlay, Clipboard Pane SIP, Ext. Keyboard SIP, Screensaver...

    What more do you want?
    • Alarm
Every WM user knows how worthelss the alarm on WM phones is...

    Games

I'm not much of a fan of games on PPC but who can say no to good ol' Marion or Contra on their phone? :cool2:

Of the several NES emulator avialable for the WM platform, I found this one to be the best with consitent 50+ fps and the ability to freel add/edit harware button mapping

Please do add more decent games to the list above

    Internet

    • Internet Explorer Add-ins
    Hate the lack of tabs?

Use this: ftxPBrowser for Windows Mobile 2003
    • Wireless sniffer
    • Putty
Life saver for me, maybe not as useful for others...http://www.pocketputty.net/download.html

    GPS

    • India Map Apps
As expcted, no free lunch on this one. YOur choices are:
    • Destinator (Satguide) - Intuitive and very usable app (Destinator) with OK Maps but let down greatly by bad POI (Points of interest) listing
    • Map My India - Marginally more accurate map than the former and the POI info is far better
However, the underlying app (NavMate) is shi$$y for lack of a better word. Buggy and difficult to use.
    • GPS info and track logging
    http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/default.htm

    MultiMedia

Rather short list since I don't feel anyone would need any other app beyond these three:

    AppLauncher

What good all these apps if you can't launch your desired apps quickly and easily straight from the today screen without so much as whipping out your stylus?

    cLaunch

    Others

    • Pocket Dictionary: http://www.cellosoft.com/software/view.php?id=42
So there you go..Please feel free to add more apps to this list

Do the software listed in the above posts fits to all Windows mobiles or they are brand specific?

^^ Generic WM 5/6 software..will work on most if not all WM hones...

    Must have browser...

    Opera Mini 4

One big thing I was missing on my WM phone vis-a-vis the iPhone was a good browser..

Opera Mini comes the closest (though not even close to surpassing)the iPhone Safari experience on a Windows phone

Easily the best single site (given the lack of tabs) browsing experience on WM
