Rs 500 laptop display on Feb 3-India-The Times of India

A $10 laptop (Rs 500) prototype, with 2 GB RAM capacity, would be on display in Tirupati on February 3 when the National Mission on

Education through Information and Communication Techology is launched.

The $10 laptop project, first reported in TOI three years ago, has come as an answer to the $100 laptop of MIT's Nicholas Negroponte that he was trying to hardsell to India. The $10 laptop has come out of the drawing board stage due to work put in by students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT-Madras and involvement of PSUs like Semiconductor Complex. “At this stage, the price is working out to be $20 but with mass production it is bound to come down,” R P Agarwal, secretary, higher education said.

Forgot to add: if this is real, i'll buy two and break one of them apart for spares, and the other one as a download machine

Maybe they will use some ARM chip or something. It will probably have just enough RAM to run linux. 2GB of flash memory is cheap these days ( 200-300 ) and will be even cheaper when bought in bulk and 2GB is enough for many linux distributions.

The processor is going to be really weak, prolly something that would normally be designed for phones/GPS. I doubt for the kind of applications that such a processor could handle, you really would need anymore than 256MB RAM.

Sorry if I do sound .. the OLPC is a great initiative targeted at the poor children, not for a tech freak who intends to break it down

Take out the ram and sell it, even then you'l be in profit

Either way, great if they can make it even in 1000, wil make awesome download rig with some obsolete linux version.

But then again its for young kids, much rather gift it to one of them

well i doubt they can achieve it for Rs500 or even 1000 since batteries, screen, processor, ram cost a significant amount .i still think that once people hear and see the spec it want even come close to OLPC let alone a laptop, mostly it will have a monocrome matrix display something like below

Even if it costs a 1000 bucks its still btr than the $100 lappy...

i think all it would manage to do is open a word processing software, calculator n if kids are lucky.. paint...

fr the sake of the large no. of poor kids to whom this might bring a smile i hope this thing works out...

While I have reservations about whether this will indeed be a usable "laptop", a good post about this $10 laptop can be found at Atanu Dey's blog
