    Hi,

My parents would like to buy a netbook for internet and video chats with relatives. I have zeroed in Dell Inspiron Mini 12. Reasons being -

    1) Dell brand name - Expecting hassle free machine and good support

    2) 12 inch screen - Anything less will be too much eyestrain for my parents

    3) Ease of buying - Available at local Chroma store.

Is there any other alternative that you would like to suggest?

I am also planning a trip to Nehru Place, Delhi (I am in Noida). Can I get better deal for this netbook there? (Local Chroma store is quoting 26K).

This is urgent. Wil make the purchase within day or two.

    Thanks!

I think you'll get a better deal if you order directly from Dell instead of purchasing from a local retailer. Just go to dell.co.in and ask for a quote. They'll call you. But before confirming the purchase you might want to go to the local store and have a look at it.

I think Dell doesnt sell netbooks online. I remember seeing a message that these machines are available only through physical retailers.

I was recently also thinking of netbooks hence did a bit of study

the 12 inch dell mini comes with merely an 80 gb and an inferior processor

the 10 inch comes with 160 gb and better processor

may not affect if required just for browsing etc but thought i'll let you know

also they are only sold thru distributors even Dell will ask you to contact the distributor directly

i prefered the Asus 1002 ha for better looks and ram upgradeability and far suprior battery life

    just my opinion

    hope this helps

    regards

    Dev

although i have not used personally, but i think 12" screen size currently offered by dell in a netbook shall be good for reading and general work around for your parents.. smaller screen size can be an issue but smaller screen size shall also be more handy and convenient to carry and work with and you get more purchasing options with the 10" screen size..

i would prefer dell 12" mini cos the screen size would not be an issue as compared to smaller sizes.. i myself looking for one for my dad..

and they are very cheap if someone can get you from US.. check out - netbook | B&H Photo Video

all the 12" currently come with a slower proccessor than the 10" ... you have to wait a couple of months till the ion ones come out ...which will be zippier than the current 12" ones

12" should be fine for your parents in terms of ease-of-use. it's nearly impossible to use 7" or 9" display for internet and chat. tiny font and oversized tabs!!!

Get the cheapest 14inch you can get instead of a 12incher..parents and netbooks is not a good combination..

<= 12" is a netbook and cheap. 13" is an ultraportable and expensive. >= 14" is a laptop and price varies. I wonder why that's the case. A 13" laptop would be sweet.

    Guys, thanks for your suggestions!

Since 12" screen was minimum requirement and laptops are just too heavy/pricey, I stayed with my decision of Dell Inspiron Mini 12.

I finally bought it today from Croma for 26K! Yet to open the pack :-)

Croma is also offering 1 year extended warranty for 1.2K (Beyond Dell's own warranty of 1 year). Is it worth it?
