Even GTX 260 is good only to those who want a single GPU solution. For $70 more, you can the 9800GX2 which almost matches the performance of the GTX 280. on the other hand a 4870 crossfire may also be a decent solution for the price.

the best value for money seems to be the 9800GTX SLI setup..u get one for $270 ..two for $550 ..and it beats the GTX280 by quite some margin.

The 260 looks about right for the price, I was thinking to step up 2 280's but they are way more expensive for the performance jump. Perhaps the 260's would be my choice. Also it looks to me that the 4870x2 will be faster than 280. I think nividia might do price cuts after the launch of 4000 series!

Thing is 4780X2 seems to be slated for a fall 2008 release. If it is so, nVidia will make the most out of it till that card launches.

dats coz they make the 260 with 448 bit mem bus..instead of the 512 bit found on the GTX280 ..thats to reduce cost.

Also the GTX 26o consists of lesser shader..jus not disabled ..so dat it could be enabled via a mod.

GTX 260 is a cost cutting measure and and a measure to improve yields.

wishful thinking though.
now thats just wrong
they make only 1 chip and sell it in 2 versions....they lock off part of it and sell it as the gtx260
the higher binned parts are sold as the gtx280

just like some 9600gso cards could be modded to become 8800gt

Yep and this is sad, but I'd like to see if the 4000 series making any impact on the price of 280, I doubt they would reduce 260 any less than $400 where it is right now! Btw any reviews with 260's in SLI, I would wanna compare those numbers my SLI setup.

After reading a couple of reviews of the GTX 280 and 260, i cant help but think that nVidia is gunning for intel big time!

This is no longer about ATI vs nVidia, the next big fight will be between Intels Larrabee and maybe a 55nm version of the GT200 or its successor

And while the 2 giants beat the crap out of each other, AMD should get some breathing time to sucker punch them

I think AMD is playing well in the motherboard/chipset/gfx and low end CPU's.
They know their strengths and weaknesses and coming up with products which sell in good number with lesser profits.

Even though AMD brought ATI I think its gonna be the gfx division (ATI) that will pull AMD out of the crutches and I forsee AMD playing a similar strategy with the CPU .. selling VFM stuff for thr masses and this should be enough to keep intel on its toes in providing good prices for thier CPU's and wooing consumers with technology.

another thing to observe is that nvidia is focusing more and more on the general purpose use and forcing its resources into CUDA
this could get them huge sales in the enterprise market

GeForce GTX 280 SLI Dual | Triple review test

Quote:
So, allow me again to revert to something I mentioned in the introduction. GeForce GTX 280 SLI is much like Pamela Anderson's SLI boobs .. grand, maybe too big, certainly a nice pair to look at .. but surely very expensive
^^you can see the cpu bounded nature of this card with the x6800 cpu
omg 3ghz cpu is limiting the performance at 1920X1200 too
