Default Need Advice to buy a new graphics card

Dear Members

I have an intel core 2 duo e7400 cpu with 4 gb ddr2 ram (motherboard is Intel DG31PR) & a 19 inch lcd monitor.
i am interested in buying a new graphics card for my PC, after doing some research i found that 4850 & 4870 will be good for my pc if i want to run games at decent (high) settings, but to buy those cards i would also need to buy a good branded psu which is atleast 500w & higher.

But now i am in a dillemma, now that the 5xxx series has been launched by ATI which supports DX 11 interface, do you think its worthwile to still buy the 4870 card which will be in excess of Rs 9000 & the PSU. because i dont want to buy the card & suffer in just a short time when DX 11 games get released in the PC market & my card goes outdated.

Dear Members what would be your advice - should i go ahead & buy the 4870 card? or will a 4850 be good for my pc & monitor ( my criteria is i want to play games at High settings (games like Batman Arkham Asylum, Modern Warfare 2, Left for Dead2, NFS Shift, Ashes Cricket), & what PSU will be best for my PC (max budget for PSU - Rs 4000)

or should i wait for the prices of the 5xxx series to come down so that i can buy one of them. or better still invest a little more & buy a Xbox 360 modded to play all the latest games with worrying about hardware hassles.

Awaiting your response

Thanking you

Well, considering that there aren't any DirectX 11 games on the market yet (discounting battleforge here as its just a card game), i wouldn't consider it a big deal to get a DirectX 11 card yet.

Better would be to save the cash now and get a DirectX 11 card later when its more mainstream especially considering your system build which isn't very top end.

And yes, better stick with the 4850 instead of the 4870 as your card is gonna be bottlenecked by the CPU anyway and moreover your desktop resolution is around 1440X900.

4k budget??? Look no further and get the Corsair VX450 as you can't go wrong at all with it!

Sapphire HD 4850 512MB ~ 6.8k
Corsair VX 450 ~ 3.8k

I would suggest you to go with this combo. 4850 will max out all the games on your monitor, and will provide a good balance for your rig as Alias mentioned. Later on when you upgrade your entire rig, then think about Dx11 cards as those will be mainstream by then. Now this combo will take care of your gaming needs with ease.

Also, you may go for Gigabyte Superb 460 PSU as well for 2.2k, which is sufficient for your rig, but VX450 is recommended as it is a good investment, with a 5yr warranty, it will serve you for quite some time.

Haah, good one there Arun. The Gigabyte 460W would also fit the bill here but the VX450 is better on the long run. Plus 5 year warranty =

As u r gaming at 19 inch lcd 4850 will satisfy u ,with all settings maxed...also u can wait for some time for mid range directx 11 cards from ati and nvidia to launch, this will further reduce the price of existing cards so that u can have more option within u r budget..

What about 1GB 4850? will it have a substantial improvement in in game settings when compared to a 512 mb 4850 or should i stick to the 512mb version since i use only a 19 inch monitor & will stick to 1440x900 resolution

1GB won't give you much boost as it only helps in very high resolutions around HD and above. 512Mb is fine and will perform just as well as 1GB version in your case, with an exception of GTA4, just because it is not coded properly. So IMO, go for Sapphire 512MB.

what about Powercolor 4850? is it good when compared with Sapphire, coz i checked its price - its a bit cheaper than sapphire & i read on guru3d that powercolor 4850's are factory overclocked + i also read that sapphire 4850 had heating & driver issues.

Powercolor is also good but is it better than Sapphire? I don't know.

The cheaper one you talking about is not factory overclocked, just compare the specs between the two and then you'll understand. 4850 in general runs hotter than most cards and my Sapphire touches 79C when on load, don't know how Powercolor matches upto this. Regarding drivers, both use the exact same drivers released by ATI (AMD) and hence there's no question of having driver issues.

Actually I wanted to open a new thread but I think it will be like doing spam so I am posting my questions in this thread. I exactly have the same problem. But ppl here suggesting to buy a 4850 which is @ 7000/-. I play game @1280*1020. If I invest 7000/- now why not I put 3000/-+ more and buy a 4870/GTX260 which will be able to play game greatly even after 6m to 1y. Plz correct me if I am wrong. And moreover, when nvidia releases their DX11 cards then DX10 card get stop from production so Now-bought-card will get lesser value in return. And majority of ppl will prefer to buy DX11 cards even if we wish to sell these DX10 cards which will be faster than their DX11 countrerparts @ lower price(~huge loss).
I also waited for nVidia DX 11 cards but they have extended their releasing date. I wanted to buy ATI 5770 too but according to what I have seen on internet(wiki) is that nVidia is coming with some damn good thing with their cards. Their GTS340/350 are way ahead when compared to ATI 5750/5700.
I need to buy a card now becaz I cant play any games with my 8400GS. Should I go for a second hand card for less than 4000/- for now or play with my current 8400GS till nvidia's DX11 card launch. But the problem is that many ppl ended up in buying a new GPU while they have posted[WTB] for 2nd hand GPU in MEMBER's Market section(either we done get a deal or not some good deals). So what shoud I/we do now?

Thank you.

Glacial Power 650watt - 4.6k

Better VFM than Corsair VX 450 .

VX 450 now 4.1k.

Glacial power 650w would be able to pull off a ATI 5850 but VX 450 is limited by its 1 molex connector for PCIE
