Thread: Hail 3870X2!!!

Waiting for ATI's latest salvo. wait is over
Crude reviews of 3870X2 have appeared as ATI prepares to unveil the card on Jan 23. The indications are that the card will be able to match, if not conveniently pawn 8800 Ultra.
In this review 3870X2 is ahead of Ultra by around 10 to 20% in all benchmarks except Crysis, Lost Planet and NFS. From benchies, it looks that ATI still need to polish the drivers for the card.
Temps are also a little on higher side but not much when we consider that 8800GT often go above 80 degrees.
Power consumption can be seen here
Of course, we also need to keep in mind that GF9800 GX2 is slated to appear within two-three months. But for now the card looks promising for those who absolutely own the fastest-biggest gfx cruncher. 8800 Ultra sells for above $600. Price of 3870X2 is suggested to be around $450
PS: here is another review with a pro feel. Edit: And this one is the best and most polished one among the three.
Whatever you call it, it most definitely has earned AMD the graphics performance crown that it has been craving for well over a year now. This is a pretty significant feat considering the cadence with which the crown has changed hands recently. The Radeon HD 3870 X2 is an exciting product, not only because it provides incredible performance, but also because it marks the first time that a dual-GPU solution has been implemented successfully to the point where people will actually consider buying this card for reasons other than novelty. It marks the first time that two graphics cores can actually be married onto one PCB without bringing forth all kinds of scary (and material) heat and power concerns. NVIDIA’s dual-GPU solution should be coming out pretty soon, and it will be interesting to see how the GeForce 9800GX2 stacks up to the HD 3870 X2 on the performance and price fronts. Things are definitely heating up in the graphics world, both figuratively and literally, and the next four or five months should mark the return of competition in the high-end graphics market.Last edited by hatter; 22 Jan 08 at 05:57 PM.

Ok, time to spoil party? Well maybe or do we say that ATI, at least this time, want to make sure there are no bloopers. They have apparently delayed the card by a week so that they can "work on new drivers for the cards."
Hmmmm... it's Fudzilla by the way - 22 Jan 08 08:51 PM #3
good going amd....break up the monopoly..will b getting my 3850 from US soon..
if only their cpu's were competent.. - 24 Jan 08 02:43 AM #4
nvidia is also planning a 9800 series , will have to see how these new chips match
and hope the prices of the present ones fall a bit, waiting for an upgrade too long here - 24 Jan 08 02:50 AM #5
dunno man...i wont hail ATi unless i get proper after release benchies , and after i get the price here.......lots of pre release hype came with the 2900s , which themselves got pwn3d badly.......
