It is always better to clean the previous drivers

They should not cause any conflict.

If any problem occurs, uninstall the drivers for the device which you are not using.

Use this in case the uninstall does not solve your problem.

Once you uninstall the drivers for the unwanted device, Windows will install a generic driver which will provide you basic functionality if you ever want to use it without the original drivers.

Just add the external accelerator, disable the IGP via BIOS, install the Radeon drivers. No need to remove the IGP drivers. Since the device will never be polled the drivers will never be called for interfacing.

AFAIK if an external card is detected the IGP will remain inactive. The issue is not due that, conflict arises in some registry values. I have had countless of issues after switching from an ATI card to Nvidia, but vice versa was smooth

Swapping of ATI and NVIDIA Standalone cards creates registry/driver issues. But IMO Onboard graphic drivers dont conflict when a standlone GFX card is installed... But anyways its just a matter of uninstalling drivers if seen in Add/remove programs



Only if you have Standalone GFX card drivers installed and then you change to onboard VGA by removing the GFX card, then there might be some error which will pop up everytime.

Ok so how do I disable the IGP via BIOS as I rarely visit the BIOS.

After getting opinions from the experts I feel there should not be any problem. If any problem comes then I know TE guyz are here 2 help me out

I think PCI INIT, but it varies. Though as Aces mentioned, you might not need to do that. Just plug in the GPU, and it gets cut.

There is no need to do any tinkering in the BIOS until the display refuses to start with the GPU connected. If you still want to go in depth, post your mobo details, and we will help ya out.

Thanks Vivek. I'll first try it without doing anything. Nowadayz I have been doing a lot of comparison between various GPUs as I have to buy a one. So the information I collected is that HD5770 is HD3d while HD6770 is not. Why it is so? As 6770 belongs to latest generation. When I read the thread about nvidia 3d discover vision, I was lured by it. So I was thinking to go for nvidia based card...

Actually all the 5 and 6 series cards are HD3D enabled, but only the 6 series cards have BlueRay 3D , plus 6 series can do 3D over HDMI as they are at version 1.4a vs 5 series @ version 1.3. Also, the 6770, 6750 etc all cards are actually the same 5 series cards with the minor upgrades as noted above.

Now, if you want to do 3D gaming i think you need to get a good GPU + decide your platform, AMD or nVIDIA. If you plan to use nVIDIA, w8 for 3D vision 2 stuff to come out before making purchases. If AMD, you will need to ensure that your tv/monitor has support for HD3d.

Vivek, what would be the equivalent of HD6770 in Geforce series ? Which gives me same features & performance and in within same price range.

GTX 550 Ti, from Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart : Best Graphics Cards For The Money: October 2011



I dunno about price range, but 6770 is a better bet as below 560 Ti, all nVIDIA cards lose in VFM wrt AMD.
