Think twice before ordering Internal Hard Drives from Flipkart

I generally buy every piece of PC component from Prime, but they were out of stock with 3TB WD Green for quite some time. Hence I ordered it from Flipkart. I'd just like to inform everyone to think twice before buying internal hard drives from them unless you have no other option. Two issues:

1) As some of you already know, their Bhiwandi & Mumbai warehouse ship internal hard drives in thin cardboard box usually reserved for books and physical media. The only protection they used to secure the hard drive inside was a loose bubble wrap (without duct tape). As the warehouse was less than 10 km from my location, it would not have involved any major transport ride and I got it in working condition barely. It does have physical dent in its outer body due to bad packaging. Drive functions normally to the best I know, I would eventually have RMA'd it down the line.

2) The drive they sent was a recertified drive, not a brand new piece. Didn't see that coming (especially from Flipkart). I gave them benefit of doubt and continued using the drive as long as the WD accepted the serial number and offered full 2-year warranty (the process which involves sending email to wdsupport@microland.com to get exact 2 year warranty from invoice date). I was under the impression that recertified drive may be eligible to be sold as new (because I had past experience from other HDD manufacturers in which replacements came with labels calling them "Refurbished" specifically).

WD Support emailed back informing:

We are sorry to inform you that your request to update the warranty on the drive SN: X_X_X_X_X_X_X could not be processed, as this is a recertified drive that is given as a replacement drive given to a customer, not a prime drive.

There cannot be a purchase receipt for a replacement drive.

Hence, the purchase receipt sent by you is considered to be manipulated and we would not be able to update the warranty on this drive.

Kindly contact the place of purchase for any warranty related issues.

I forwarded the email to flipkart with scan of HDD label and copy of bill (which had same serial number written on it). They initially tried to sweep it under the rug like it was no big deal sending used/recertified/refurbished product as new. They claimed to not have stock of the same drive (false! they were accepting orders on their website). After escalating the issue and following up, they offered to refund the money. I had all my data on the drive and couldn't just return the drive. I would have to purchase another another drive, transfer data from existing to newly purchased drive and then send it over to their warehouse. So I had to make those arrangements before I agreed with their refund option (they would have arranged pickup same day).

Next day, Flipkart customer service got back saying they could arrange replacement but I would have to send the drive back to them first. I politely informed them that a customer should not suffer and jump through hoops for their wrong doings (sending recertified drives as new to customers). Then I explained them what a recertified drive means - a product which is used, had a defect which was supposedly fixed by manufacturer. I requested them to send the replacement drive first so that I can transfer the data and return the first drive back to them the following day. After some explaining to different customer service representatives, they agreed to send replacement first. And guess what? they immediately initiated pickup of the first drive. Another round of explaining and asking a single Flipkart representative to handle the issue, they agreed to send replacement (day before yesterday). Still no word if and when the replacement drive will be shipped. Hopefully, all goes well with the replacement.

Long story short, not worth it buying these internal hard drives online. Get them locally if you can. If this was any big ticket item which couldn't be RMA'd so easily, I would have definitely not taken this so casually. Mind you I still had to play the legal-action and reveal-the-scam card to get the solution I got.

Please ensure you receive a brand new Internal Hard Drive without any mention of recertified/refurbished on them.

I've personally come to the conclusion that Flipkart is no savior of Indian ecommerce, they are no different that the rest of the dealers or e-tailers who would do anything to make extra unlawful financial gains. Who knows how many other customers Flipkart may have scammed by sending recertified drives as new and end users never realizing it. Definitely a fraudulent practice by Flipkart if this is not a one-off incident.

I had this same problem with two other sellers. one was SMC delhi and another one seller from ebay.in. ordered a WD 1TB black from SMC and received a 'recertified' drive. sent that drive back and received the new correct model. I have dealt them numerous times before never had any slip-ups like this. another time from an ebay.in seller (dunno why I bought from them probably some coupons) which I totally didnt notice the 'recertified' text until I saw the drive again after some 2~3 weeks when taking apart the system for cleaning. it was too late then.

even if we get correct drive eventually it is painful and agonising to go through these processes. anyway kudos to you for handling the situation properly and calmly instead of a plain rant post :) anyway the problem we have is no matter how popular or strong any brand is in India it is still throttled by clueless idiotic and/or crooked employees at the last mile. and they are plenty of them around.

Customer service in India is a joke. No website can match Amazon's level of customer satisfaction in ebusiness i believe.
Primary reason is that these people know that if one customer will go someone else will come.

Eye opener
The only eye opener is the "holier than thou" attitude of the Thread starter @Sourabh. He has detailed when he found the various defects, and yet once he did not bother to return it to flipkart and avail of their 30 days replacement guarantee. Why accept delivery at all without inspection? Everyone has camera phones, why not take a few pics of the sealed damaged package? Crying foul after turning a blind eye to it is not acceptable either.

I would like to hear of any first hand experience you have had with Amazon.

I have had experience with flipkart and I am more than satisfied, Mind you, my purchase involved the wrong HDD being shipped to me, so it was not exactly what I wanted, yet I am a satisfied customer, and will encourage others to shop from there.

If you want "Clued" employees handling your drives, be prepared to pay for the Cluing and order it it from a pure IT company like Dell, they will ensure you will get exactly what you want and even pack it far exceeding your specification.

You cannot have employees of a company that handles everything from socks to laptops and paid minimum wages to know much about your precious drive at cut throat prices.

INSULTING PEOPLE TRYING TO MAKE AN HONEST LIVING IS NOT COOL.

I have personally started to do this. I take a video of the package when i am opening it to get a proof that (in case) damage was there beforehand and i did not do it.

As far as amazon is concerned...

1. On blackfriday i wasn't able to buy a certain item and i just asked their customer care when it will be back in stock. I told them because of the black friday sale and due to high server load, i could not buy. What they did was credit my account with 5$ promotion balance for the inconvenience.

2. I got a travel pillow from amazon and in 2 days the chain snapped. Had a chat with customer care and they sent a new pillow right away. I offered to return back the old but they said not needed.

3. Returned a laptop battery 4 months or so after i bought it. It was well outside their return policy period but still they offered me a 80% money back. I never used to battery as laptop went bust.

In the above cases, i never wanted to take advantage of their service but their replies and customer service far far exceeded my expectations.

Doesn't matter what he does/does not do after he received the product. My point is if someone is buying a product advertised a new, they should get a brand new product. Period.

Another thread which will become how customer service of Flipkart can never be as good as amazon.

Ok, We get it that Amazon gives your Orga%%% but lets us discuss how one can be careful than discuss how you got 50$ credit from the customer executive of amazon.

With that statement it is clear you have never been inside a warehouse, mistakes happen, and when you realise it, you fix it - in this case by returning it immediately. Why install it even if you notice a dent on on the case? Or if the outer package was damaged, why accept it at all ? None of the rest would have happened.[DOUBLEPOST=1363756791][/DOUBLEPOST]
Trying to pass a recertified/refurbished product as new, doesn't qualify as honesty .

What has that got to with insulting people at the lowest level working on minimum wage ? Do they make the policies of the company?

No offense to the thread starter but I totally agree with The Indian on this.

None taken.

The moment I found out that drive was not going to get complete 2-year warranty (after WD support email), I immediately took action to get it replaced.

I didn't notice the recertified mention on the label before WD mentioned. I was just following the normal process to note down the serial number, register the product at WD site and send email about exact date of purchase.

@TheIndian I totally understand what you're suggesting. But there was no visible damage on the cardboard box. If there was, I would not have accepted the shipment. I only found out about the dent on drive while placing the drive in the system. As long as the drive worked, I was fine. I could always RMA the drive later if the dent was going to be an issue in the long run. I had some much needed data to be backed up which was my immediate priority. As I have already mentioned in original post, Flipkart couldn't replace the product as they claimed they were out of stock initially. But I like the suggestion made here to shoot a video whenever shipment is received of something critical and open it on camera immediately in front of delivery person (no matter how lame it looks).

That is very nice, I notice you are listed as staying in India, so all this happened while you were an Indian customer in India ?

I have often pointed out, people should demand their rights, and even push for little things. But do most do it ? Why do we accept goods with damaged packaging? Why do we accept biscuit packs when 90% of the time more than 10% of the biscuits inside will not be whole ?

My interaction with Flipkart has been more than satisfactory even though I have been shipped the wrong HDD TWICE for the same order. I ultimately got the HDD locally, but I will still recommend FK for shopping, and at this instance I would also like to point out Pantaloon with good policies, REFUND of money within 30 days of return of goods in saleable condition. no questions asked. A simple, I changed my Mind.

Ok I understand the rest, A visible dent on the drive, and you are talking about backing up data on it? - This I do not understand.

I would have returned it, got my product else where if it was Urgent and asked for a refund, which takes like 3-5 days. I have always found them to be courteous and polite even though they may not give me $5 credits.

BTW did you save a pic of the "rectified label" ? I would like to see what it looks like for my knowledge

Even i got my WD 1 TB black from flipkart traveling from mumbai to bangalore packed like a damn book. Thankfully the drive is fine and a new one with 5 years of warranty starting from the day i placed the order! And i didn't had to mail WD to update the warranty. I still sent pictures and let the customer care know that they should be training there staff about packaging hard drives correctly.

Tough, but not my problem. And once OP does try and return, how does FK react?

They way you are responding, it seems that the we've touched a raw nerve.

@TheIndian The dent was on side walls of the drive which is made up of metal and quite sturdy. The dent didn't appear to be something that would affect the functioning of the drive. Had it been the bottom part of the drive (which has the circuitry, that would have been totally different story). If you notice the label image (link below) the top portion also has scuff marks. The dent and scuff marks were due to poor packaging which is one of the two issues I wanted to bring to everyone's attention. There is definitely neglect shown in packaging the drive by Flipkart.

Recertified mention on label http://i.imgur.com/fJt0qMz.jpg

Thank you for the image.

For anything to be dented, it has to be struck hard, no knowing what the G forces have done to the delicate insides.

Packaging by FK definitely needs improvement, how many of us have given that feed back to FK? I am sorry to say I did not, even though I normally am the first one to point out any deficiencies in service. But Kudos to @artattak for doing this.[DOUBLEPOST=1363761624][/DOUBLEPOST]
Check the images here - Google
Thank you for the link, but I was more interested in the specific drive of @Sourabh and Western Digital ones as I normally buy WDs only.

Apart from packaging, flipkart also needs to have honest reviews on their website and not fabricated ones. It is not right to check FK reviews for any product and deciding whether it is a good buy or not. But still i see people (outside TE) mention "Aree Flipkart pe uske aache reviews hai to aacha hoga".
