no graphics card- I think this is the problem;although I am not sure whether COD2 need a graphics card. Try some other games old and new games

If not GPU, it need atleast 128MB video memory and that error comes if you have pirated game. If the game is original, it would take care of DirectX automaticaly.

I could not understand why some new games are running with gma3100 but old games in the same serious are not running in my system. For example I could play prince of persia two thrones (2005) but not prince of persia sands of time (2003) in the same way I could install and run demo version of call of duty modern warefare (2007) in my friends dell laptop (inspiron 1525) with same gma 3100 (almost same configuration of mine) before purchasing my pc but not call of duty 2 (2005) in my sytem. Also I could play need for speed most wanted.

Expert can u help me understand the reason behind why new games are running but the same series old games are not running.

I think you need to double the copy of the games which are not working in your pc with other systems ( your friend's pc/laptop)- the problem may be with the games which you are trying to run. Is these games are original copy or pirated version? Many a times pirated version ( read ripped version) misses some important files which makes the game not working.

do you update the intel gma driver;get the latest driver for your chipset, graphics and sound card and dx 9c march 09. make a fresh winxp installation (possibly one with integrated xp2). install in the following order:

    1. chipset driver - restart

    2.graphics driver - restart

    3. sound driver - restart

    4.directx

    and try again the games

Have u tried updating the DirectX on ur system?

U might be having the latest graphics and chipset drivers but old DirectX drivers will give u error.

U are on XP, right? XP will not have updated DirectX. It will have updations as on 2001 or 2002 and COD2 was after that.

So u'll need to update DirectX from Microsoft's website. and then it will work.

Doesn't matter whether it is pirated or genuine unless its a ripped version which has problems.

As far as i can see from ur post, COD4 worked on ur friend's system coz its a Dell which comes with DX and all pre-configured.

U can install COD4 demo on ur system. It should also update DX i guess. And then u can try COD2 and it should work.
