Hmm SLI on X58 doomed?

Quote:
Yes you will be able to run SLI on the X58 chipset. But at what cost? Not only will you end up paying more for the ability to do this, but inevitable performance deficits will also be present. On the surface this looks like a huge score for NVIDIA. But when you think about it, NVIDIA didn’t really score anything. What they did do is put one of their previously exclusive chips on the market. In exchange, they get the possibility that motherboard manufacturers will put the chip onto Intel’s (their competitor’s) chipset, the $30 that they charge for it, and any potential revenue that will be generated by graphics cards sales as a result of Nehalem.
SLI on X58: That Simple? | FPSLabs

PS: Of course, FPSLabs is a little close to AMD. Remember, they were first with 3870 X2 and the drivers and sample came from AMD chaps.

FPSLab being partial to AMD or not... that article actually makes a lot of sense.
At the end of it, only thing that came to my mind was... "So much for the can of whoop-ass!!"

Hello,

My name is Thomas and I am the guy that wrote that article on FPSLabs.

I just wanted to say that we are not partial to AMD. The Radeon HD3870X2 article and drivers was not at all sanctioned by AMD, and in fact I got in a fair amount of trouble for posting the article on the site. Some advice: Multi-billion dollar corporations can afford good lawyers.

Also, I don't see how saving $10 on nForce 200 when bought for the purpose of using it on X58 will result in any more than $10 savings on an already more expensive board to develop. We will see though. Most of what I wrote is my best speculation so definitely none of it is guaranteed to happen.

I understand your point. Seeing how Intel developed a reference board consisting 8 layers, I don't imagine it will be very cost effective for other makers to build boards with more added features. Also, like you mentioned it's all very complex. Even though most of the stuff you wrote was speculation, logically it DOES make sense. But then again, like you said... we shall see when things start rolling.

On the other hand... It's nice to see a response from writer of an article on a forum post. Welcome to TE.

Welcome to TE.

I wrote that thing about 3870 X2 because during you coverage of the card you wrote it somewhere (probably while writing about CrossfireX before the official driver was released) that by withholding some info you were trying to protect the good relationship that FPSLabs had with AMD.

I am sure that AMD did not provide you with the 3870 X2 that you tested and neither for that matter I believe TweakTown got the 8800GTS directly from Nvidia when they had the review of the card up on their site before NDA was lifted, but I believe you have some very good sources in AMD that helped you.

If you have some "very good sources" somewhere, more often than not, it makes you slightly partial in favor of the company/department where your sources are located. Moreover, we all know that "very good sources" are more prone to plant a story rather than your usual PR guys. After all, the relationship between a source and the media is mutual.

Everybody does it and it's all very natural. It does not mean that whatever you are reporting is not true or that you are trumpeting someone's cause but it just adds that little bit of perspective.

Your article about SLI on X58 was brilliantly argued and there is nothing wrong with it. But I just added that line about your review of 3870 X2 because I wanted TE users to know that FPSLabs has some very good sources within AMD

Cheers!

Did not mean to be accusatory in any way, sorry if it seemed like I was. I totally understand what you mean.

Thanks for the compliment as well!
