Philips 29" HD-Ready CRT TV

Hi all,

I am new here. I just want your views on this CRT HD-Ready TV.

Philips 29PT8836/94 HD-Ready TV

I have already done my own share of research and this TV is one of the best HD-Ready TV's supposedly. The other two in the Indian market are,

Samsung SlimFit CS-29Z40 and
Sony KV-DB29M80/50

But the Sony one is too costly for my liking and the Samsung one doesn't have as much rave reviews as the Philips one. Note that the HD-Ready doesn't mean a HDMI connection, just the ability to display HD resolutions. Thanks in advance guys. Any suggestion would be accepted.

The retail price is about Rs.25000 max I think. I saw a demo and on putting Progressive Scan the image considerably increased in visual clarity.

Actually, I asked many people and they said it supported true Progressive Scan and 100HZ support. And it is HDTV-IN so if you ever buy a HD-DVD player or a X360, then you can play them on the TV.

I have the 34 inch model of this tv.Costed me around 37k.But one of the best tvs around.Mine can do 1080p so it's possible that the 29 inch model supports 1080p too.

Which state are you from and which shop are you getting this tv ??

I am from Chennai and getting it at a retail shop here.

u sure its for 25k...i dont think so...cos abt 6 months ago the 29"HD CRT from Sony was around 42k

OT: Does anyone have any idea about the supported video formats for the Sony 29" HDTV? Its not mentioned on their website. Also how does one go about testing HD displays and its supported video formats? Most of the retail stores just have standard DVD players hooked up.

The latest price for the 29" Sony HD TV from a sony exclusive store is around 36k - still pretty high though.

so why is there such a huge diff b/w philips and sony

@Crazy Eddy - You can use an upconverting DVD player, like the Philips 5965/5968. These TVs do NOT have HDMI, so 1080p native from an HD DVD or Blu-Ray player is out of the question.

You can also use the video-out from your computer's videocard to test it.

Philips 5965 and 68 wont do upscaling for this TV. The upscale feature is only available over HDMI output for these DVD players. Sad thing but thats how it is.
