Help: DVD Recorder from USA

Hi,

Friend's got a Toshiba DVD recorder from USA

Problems are:
1. Cannot play most of the DVDs here (is there a way to break the region code or something)
2. Bigger problem: Can record only in black & white that too only half the screen (seems to be NTSC - PAL issue, is there a way out)

Needs the above to work with Samsung 40" LCD (Bordeaux series) & Set Top Box (In cable)

You can change the region code by pressing specific set of keys in remote(hack), search around in the net with the model number of your dvd recorder and you will find the guide for the region code change.
