Windows Cant Create a Folder named "con"

Hi Guys

Just received this peice of info from my friend.

An Indian discovered that nobody can't create a folder
anywhere named as "con"

This is something pretty cool...and unbelievable...
At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened!

Try it out yourself...

Windows cant create a folder named "con"

Just Try this out.

Strange but true.

I bet you all will be surprised.

If any one here at TE has this reason for this please share it as i would
like to know whats there so special abt "con"

All these are windows-reserved words. You cant give these names to folders or files

• CON
• AUX
• COM1
• COM2
• COM3
• COM4
• LPT1
• LPT2
• LPT3
• PRN
• NUL
Found this in windows help

I think those naming restrictions are remanents of DOS and IFS weirdisms...

or cud be one of NTFS's undocumented features - do you know that Windows actually stores some FS data on HDDs in a non-standard manner?

wow!!!!

i had read this in mail...i thot tat friend is just fwding a joke..

well u obviously cannot name a folder "con" with the quotes na.. tats wat i thot.. the " does the trick..lol...

NUL, AUX, CON, COM1-4, LPT1-3, and PRN are reserved words used for DOS Devices. These are specified in IO.SYS and date back from the early MS DOS days. Here is a brief list:
CLOCK$ - System clock
CON - Console; combination of keyboard and screen to handle input and output
AUX or COM1 - First serial communicationport
COMn - Second, Third, ... communicationport
LPT1 or PRN - First parallel port
NUL - Dummy port, or the "null device" which is known under Linux as /dev/null.
CONFIG$ - Unknown
....It aint a flaw! ;)

Got this when i was searching for this 'CON' folder thing...
This is not my own research, i got this in some blog-site.
Well, one can actually create a folder named 'CON' by just entering this command:

mkdir \\.\c:\con
but u cant delete this folder by simply right clicking and giving delete command.instead, use this:
rd /S /Q \\.\c:\con
