Soon one of my friend is going to abroad for 4months. His house will be locked for the period. He has got inverter and luminous battery...6 months old.... While leaving should he switch off the main or leave it on for the battery charging? I heard it is not a good thing to keep battery idle for a long time?..What is the best way to do in this case....any suggestions please?

The inverter should have an off switch on it. It will keep trickle charging the battery in that mode whenever there's mains power, and shut itself off when there's no mains power.
As long as the battery is fully charged there should be no problem if he's away for four months. Shutting down the main switch will lead to battery self discharge in that time. Long times of being in discharged state is not good for batteries.

On locking out house, leave the inverter in on position with inverter position on and leave only one tubelight in on position. This will discharge the battery little when light will go out and recharge the battery when light comes back, so that battery charge/discharge cycle will be regular and battery will be in good condition.

One more thing before going out for long time, top with distilled water so that battery does not dries up during this period.

No point in keeping the light running as it would just waste electricity. It is also a potential electrical hazard to leave any electrical device running for months without an supervision.

Just get the battery water full and charge it fully and then disconnect it from mains and disconnect output as well.
A fully charged battery doesn't depreciate in health in contrast to an uncharged battery.

Leave the place tension-free with mains OFF as well.
