Samsung Electronics is gearing up for pushing the boundaries of its high-end Android-based smartphones to new heights, and it has already confirmed that, it seems.

Apparently, a company’s official let it slip that a new phablet is en route to the market this year, one that would be larger than last year’s 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II smartphone.

“Samsung is working on introducing a new phablet using a 5.9-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen,” said exec told The Korea
Times today.

The company has been previously rumored to plan the launch of a successor for the Galaxy Note II with a 6.3-inch screen, but it seems that a smaller device might actually arrive on shelves from the vendor’s labs, as UnwiredView notes.

In addition to confirming the large screen of the upcoming mobile phone, Samsung’s official also said that the 8-core Exynos 5 Octa processor that was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January would be included inside it.

The processor will provide users with the high performance levels they would be expecting from such a device, as well as with great download speeds.

However, it seems that no flexible screen might be used to build the device, although Samsung did have some of those to show to the world as well in January.

Following the success of Samsung’s Galaxy Note series, other vendors also ventured into the phablet space, but it seems that the South Korean vendor is set to maintain its leadership in this market segment, and that the upcoming device will help.

What remains to be seen is whether the 5.9-inch smartphone will indeed be the Galaxy Note III handset that was rumored for this year, and if Samsung plans on launching more handsets featuring such large screens in 2013.

Galaxy S IV, the next flagship device from the company, is expected to be unveiled on March 14 in New York with a smaller, 5-inch screen, though capable of delivering a full HD resolution.
