AMD Radeon HD 7900 GPUs to Ship in 2011

During the company's conference call for announcing its Q3 2011 financial results, AMD has revealed that its next-generation 28nm are on track for being shipped until the end of this year, which probably means that AMD will launch its next-gen GPUs before its main competitor, Nvidia.

The chip maker's press release for the Q3 2011 financial results reads: “AMD’s next-generation family of high-performance graphics cards is expected to ship for revenue later this year.”

It's important to note that shipping for revenue doesn't necessarily mean that the GPUs will also be available into the market, but rather that AMD will be shipping Radeon HD 7000 chips to its AIB partners.

If all goes well, the first Southern Islands parts cold still make their appearance by the end of this year, but a more probably launch date is early 2012.

AMD's Radeon HD 7000 graphics cores, known under the code name of Southern Islands, are built using TSMC's advanced 28nm fabrication node and will be split into two different product families.

The first of these will target low- and mid-range graphics solutions and will be based on the same VLIW4 architecture AMD introduced with the Radeon HD 6900 GPU series.

These will be the first to arrive, while later in 2012 AMD will introduce Radeon HD 7900 GPUs based on the Next Generation Core (NGC) architecture, the company detailed at its Fusion summit.

NCG was specially designed in order to break free from the VLIW (very long instruction word) architecture and was designed to improve performance and functionality of GPGPU computing in AMD's graphics cores.

The entry-level and mid-range Radeon HD 7000 GPUs will be known by the code name of Thames and Lombok, while the NCG HD 7900 series will use the Tahiti designation.

Nvidia's next-generation graphics cores, built using the same 28nm TSMC fabrication node and code named Kepler, will also arrive in 2012 and will be officially announced in December of this year, according to a recent report.

i think 6950 is more than enough for now. Until the next gen Xbox and PS comes, games are not going to be so intensive to beat the hell out of gfx cards... so 6959 is good investment for atleast next 2 yrs till Xbox and PS releases in 2013 end

AMD Radeon HD 7000 Launch Apparently Delayed to 2012
As we get nearer to the end of 2011, it seems like more and more sources are starting to imply that AMD's next-generation Radeon HD 7000 graphics cards won't actually get released by the end of this year, but instead will arrive in the first quarter of 2012.

This time, the information comes from the Rage3D website which cites some unnamed sources.

According to these sources, the problems seem to come from the production side, possibly indicating that TSMC is having troubles with volume production of chips based on the advanced 28nm node.

This isn't the first time we hear that the Taiwanese foundry is having issues with the yields of its 28nm fabrication process, which has entered volume production in the last week of October.

Next generation Radeon graphics cards in 2012, twice as fast

AMD has once again promised to launch the first graphics circuit at 28nm this year, with rumors of early December. According to the latest information the launch of the next generation graphics cards from AMD will take until 2012, but bring substantial performance improvements.

While waiting for 28nm and the new graphics circuits from AMD and NVIDIA have felt longer and longer away for each day that passes. AMD told NordicHardware that its next generatio Radeon graphics cards, the HD 7000 series won't come until 2012. During the latest conference call AMD once again stated that it is planning to ship 28nm graphics circuits in 2011 already, but shipping and launching are two different things.

Rage3D conforms from multiple sources that a launch in 2012 is indeed correct. The first graphics circuits at 28nm will not launch until Q1 2012. This is as suspected due to TSMC being unable to deliver on 28nm, either it has problems or the volumes are not up to match the demand.

But the good news is that the next generation cards will not disappoint. The graphics card is based on a GPU that will ne on the level, or close to HD 6990, which uses two Cayman circuits. While both AMD and NVIDIA will most likely launch the lower-end 28nm circuits first and then climb upward, making this a very interesting Winter if all pans out.

We see no reason not to trust this, since it is according to the market trends we have every time a new architecture comes along. During the transition to a new node it is about the same performance improvements as we hear about here. The 28nm node enables twice the transistor density as 40nm, with lower energy consumption and higher potential for clock frequencies. It is also the new performance circuit from AMD that will be based on the new GCN architecture.

I will. play bf3 90% time as I hardly get any time . I think 6950 should be enough for next Battlefield series games right?

completed battlefield on 6950 with all settings maxed out

AMD had said that they are going to release 7xxx series in late December or early January. But I think its going to be somewhere in Feb 12'

So finally you are getting impatient now :p You should have pounced on yesterday's 6970 on flipkart @14K...

Really??? That seems way low

Yup it was and our TE member has ordered it for 14K already... Now the prices have gone up and supra was the lucky member who is getting it at 14K and guess what its a Asus DCU edition :)
