How to sound-proof my room ???

OK guys....

A very big problem.... I have a Creative Megaworks 5.1 550. They are awesome. I like listening to music and watching movies and playing games at a pretty high volume.....

But the problem is that sometimes my mom whose room is downstairs gets disturbed.... And I am worried abt the neighbours also..... I have closed the windows whenever I play music loudly.....

But is there anything else I can do to make sure I am not inviting the cops over??? Apart from reducing the volume obviously....

I used to have a insane audio setup some years back and my neighbours complained so much that I had my doors and windows sound proofed by sandwiching 2 sheets of Formica with an inner layer of Fibre Glass. The problem was I could not hear the doorbell anymore.

Now these have been replaced with only 2 Formica sheets with wodden struts - even this reduces the sound a lot.

Its not possible to elimnate sound completely.

This helps me.
Close the doors and switch on the AC and that creates a type of vaccum and less sound is heard out side the door.
But i have thick glass windows but some other material used for my sliding windows.
Not the normal thin windows.
I too was not able to hear my door bell one day and my grandma was waiting outside the door for 1/2 hour , i then decided no more vaccum & loud noise when i am alone at home.

Also How much is Loud according to u.
Do you want so break some glass[def of loudness]

And i feel sound must allowed to flow instead of trapping it inside ur house.

Nikhil... buddy... take care with the loud volumes of your music it can affect your hearing pemanently. Our good friend Medpal will advise you better about this - EARS are his speciality.

About reducing the sound traveling out of the room use felt lining around the edges of the door and windows and look for sound proofing tiles (they are used in some movie theatres) these tiles look like they made of some sort of hard board - attach these tiles to the doors and windows.

Ok.... first of all, NO AC in my room..... Bangalore weather does not demand it....

And I do not want glass shattering loud(though my sound system is capable of that ).

And eazy --- could you give me clearer picture of what you mean?? A photo or something??? Andn how much will it cost ??? aprrox??

A picture ? Of my door ? .... it looks like an ordinary door.... it has a wood finish Laminate on both sides but it is hollow with wooden struts. COST - dont know it was part of s redo of my full house 4 years back.

no worries abt that..... I do take care.... I do not listen to LOUD music at all times.... it is just once in a way when I feel like rocking!!!! Thanks for your concern though...

get thick curtains and carpetting if you want a quick and eazy (hehe) solution

And how can I attach tiles to my windows??? I mean the windows are basically glass.....(obviously)....

And my windows are my first priority..... door is next.....

If the windows have wooden frames outside the glass than you will have to look for a sound proof material which will cover the glass and attached onto the wooden frame.

I just remembered I still have sound blocking cement sheets attached to my windows - they cover the glass totally. I live on an extremely noisy street and these cement sheets stops about 80% of the street noise.

But that means they cover also the glass part and stop the light from coming right??? ?But anyway, will give it a thought....

YES they will block the sun light. But you will propably close the windows only when you are listening to music.

Have you ever noticed how much better the music sounds when there is total darkness. I always listen to my acid rock music with all lights turned off - specially my Pink Floyd albums. I read that this is soemething to do with not being able to see the speakers and having the brain place the sound source to the area around the speakers - the sound stage really changes when the eyes dont place the position of the speakers.
