I currently have the 251s and would buy the VS4121 only if they sound a lot better when playing music.

don't think so. Altec Lansing 251 is a good set and if it's working fine, tehre is no need to change it.

At present, the 251 is connected to my dvd player, while i have a cheap mercury 2.1 connected to my pc. I am thinking of two options:

    1. The 251 remains connected to my dvd player and I buy the VS4121 for my pc but only if it produces superior sound quality for music compared to the 251.

    2. If the VS4121 produces the same sound quality for music as the 251, then I'll connect the 251 to my pc and I'll buy a Phillips 5.1 for 4.5k for the dvd player.

I hardly game these days and I watch movies on my dvd player, so I only need pc speakers for listening to music.

Ah okay. If you are thinking of buying a second set, keep 251 connected to DVD player and get VS4121 or Logitech-X-230 for your PC.

And I am sure that VS4121 won't be able to match 251!!

If the VS4121 can't match the 251, then I wouldn't get it. But I thought a 2.1 is better for music than a similar priced 5.1 system?

Altec Lansing 251 is very powerful system and if you want a 2.1 that can beat it, check Altec Lansing MX-5021, Logitech Z-4, Logitech Z-2300, Klipsch ProMedia GMX A 2.1, Swans M10.

All of them are out of my budget range. How about the FX4021? I think they retail for around 4k?

Among those two I would pick Logitech Z4 as FX4021 has problem with midrange sound as many report that the satellites aren't as good as the subwoofer and this creates a bit imbalance.

Do u know anything about the Philips DSP 3000 5.1 system? I will either get this or the Logitech Z4. They should cost the same over here, i.e., around 4.5k.

I wont recommend Philips.. Specially their 5.1, its sounds like s**t.

Under 4k, VS4121 is the best option:

    OR

Get Edifier C3 if its available for 3.9k as it was recently at Delhi.

Well, the Philips MMS 5.500i/c 5.1 system seems to have pretty good reviews but I can't find it anymore.

Edifier C3 is available here for 4,670/- against order. It'll take about 7 days. Should I get it instead of the Z-4 or the VS4121 ?

    Hi

If you compare music playback quality then the Altec Lansing VS4121 would be better than your 251. The VS4121 has a bigger and better subwoofer and each satellite speaker has 2 micro drivers which produce crisp highs. But the mid range sounds produced by VS4121 might not be as good as the high and low end sound, this is because of the downward firing mid drivers in the satellites. But the overall sound of the VS4121 is good.

But don't expect a huge difference in sound between 251 and VS4121. If you want a even better sounding 2.1 speakers then get the Altec MX5021E which should cost Rs 6500+.

Philips 5.1 speakers are good but their sound quality will not be as good as your Altec 251.

I have already placed my order for the Edifier C3 for 4.5k :hap2:. It should arrive in 7-10 days time. My only concern is if something goes wrong after the 6 months warranty period is over. Though the distributer assured me that he will take care of it, I am wondering how much will he charge me for the transportation.

He told me that I am the first person to buy this model in the whole of north-east India . Apparently, nobody here wants to pay 4.5k for just a 2.1 speaker set.

He wanted to know the source of my information about this particular model and I mentioned this site. I think he must have checked it out on his laptop there and then.

Anyway, a big thanks to everyone for ur suggestions and advice and in helping me in finally making this choice. :hap2:
