ya webkit is gaining traction. but its not just 3 rendering engines... its also form factor soon... websites being accessed from desktops and more and more from handhelds with mobile IE, iphone, android, mini-mo etc

edit: this post from chrome on vista... still to figure out why the installer doesnt launch in WINE (maybe network setup)...

yes it is taking a lot of memory. i guess the main selling point will be the sandboxing of tabs and the JS speed if it can really be as fast as they claim it can... i dont care too much for gears at this point..

update: i dont find the JS speed (page openings) to be faster than FF 3.0.1. and im looking forward to FF 3.1 JS speed improvements...

imo, firefox can incorporate all the 'new' features which chrome has in its next version, won't be that hard to add the omnibox, or the simplicity of the tabs, or improve the status bar, incognito etc

yes, id like to see FF (or its extensions) improve further by copying some of chrome's ideas. i like the minimalistic UI (just like GMail they did it again for the browser), just tabs and a few small buttons for forward/back and options etc... no full screen F11 kiosk mode for chrome at the moment. i also like when you open a tab, it shows previews of frequently visited sites you can click, that is a definite one FF should do to avoid me opening my bookmarks folder or google bookmarks or start typing in the address bar...

LOL @ incognito browsing help page:

Quote:
You've gone incognito. Pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the incognito window. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be preserved, however.

Going incognito doesn't affect the behavior of other people, servers, or software. Be wary of:
Websites that collect or share information about you
Internet service providers or employers that track the pages you visit
Malicious software that tracks your keystrokes in exchange for free smileys
Surveillance by secret agents
People standing behind you
Learn more about incognito browsing.
ehehe, i wonder if that is a bit tongue-in-cheek or they really think people can be so careless

Did a small personal test for analysing memory usage by Opera 9.27 and Chrome Beta.
1. Cleared all cache, filled form details, history etc. for both the browsers.
2. Opened up 10 different websites in tabs in both.
3. Let all the pages load completely.
4. Checked the memory usage by both the browsers..

Result:

TEst might be incomplete or with flaws, but it still shows that Opera is more lightweight..!

You are paying for IE the same way you are going to pay for Chrome on Windows. Please dont say you can get chrome for free via Linux, we are comparing IE's cost and Chrome's cost.
Any windows user can download IE for free, just like he can download Chrome for free.

Only downside is that web developers will now have three rendering engines to deal with, as if two wasn't enough.
Well, i liked IE8's Smart Bar than Firefox's bar. IE8's bar is much more refined, nicely sectioned and includes more info. It looks much better and polished too. You cant deny the fact that FF3's bar is ugly and looks bigger in size than it needs to be.

Tried the JS speed on IE8? I found it to be a lot more snappier than FF3.
================================================== ===

Another cool feature of Chrome is the search suggestion via the Omni Bar. Now, to open a site you know the title of but not the address, no need to search via google and then open it. Just type in the Title of the page and you have the url presented to you right there in the omni bar.
For eg. To open Google reader, i did not type google.com/reader , i just typed in Google reader and it gave me the url by itself. A huge timesaver!!
